Electronic Travel Authority or Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a kind of registration, which is not officially classified as a visa, required for foreign travellers to a country who normally do not require a visa under some circumstances.
Different from a proper visa which the traveller normally has no recourse if rejected, if an ETA is rejected the traveller can choose to apply for a visa instead.
The following countries are known to require such registration for foreign travellers:

Australia
Maps Electronic Travel Authorization
Canada
Travellers from visa-free countries entering Canada by air, except United States citizens, must obtain an ETA prior to arrival. ETA is not required if arriving by land or sea.
Travellers from Brazil who normally require a visa to enter Canada, if held a Canadian visa within 10 years or holding a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa, are also eligible to ETAs. Such travellers with ETA may only enter Canada by air if not holding a visa.
Hong Kong
Indian nationals entering Hong Kong visa-free must apply for a pre-arrival registration (PAR) before. If it is not successful, the traveller must apply for a proper visa instead.
Taiwan citizens, if born in Taiwan or entered Hong Kong as a Taiwan citizen before, may also apply for a pre-arrival registration instead of getting an entry permit (a de-facto visa) to enter Hong Kong using their Republic of China passport. They may also enter Hong Kong permit-free by using a Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents (the travel document for mainland China where the Republic of China passport is not recognized) issued by mainland China authority.
India
Travellers from most countries in the world can get an ETA for travelling to India since 2014. The scheme was changed to e-Tourist Visa (eTV) in 2015.
Sri Lanka
Travellers to Sri Lanka must get an ETA prior to getting a visa on arrival at the entry port, except for a few countries where the ETA is exempted, and for a few countries where a visa must be got in advance.
United States
Travellers under Visa Waiver Program are required to obtain an ESTA if arriving the United States by air or cruise. ESTA is not required if the traveller enters the U.S. by land or by ferry, and also not required for Canadian citizen which admission to the U.S. is covered by a different scheme.
